A personal truth became a mission
"Growing up, children who didn't perform well in exams were labeled 'daft' and marched from class to class. Years later, working in child welfare, I cared for a child with learning and behavioral difficulties. That's when I realized: my classmates were never daft. They were children with learning differences who were misunderstood—and harmed—instead of supported."
"As a lawyer with decades in the adoption field, I knew that vulnerable children deserve families. This dual passion—advocating for inclusive education and securing loving homes for children—became PlusOne Charities."
Naa Adjorkor Mohenu,— Lawyer, Founder & Executive Director
From a personal childhood memory to a professional calling, PlusOne Charities exists because one person saw a gap and decided to fill it. That commitment remains at the heart of everything we do.
A growing force in Ghana's child welfare landscape
Founded in 2024, PlusOne Charities brings together clinical psychologists, special educators, community health workers, and social workers—each with 5+ years of experience in Ghana's education and child welfare sectors.
We operate from Accra and three regional hubs (Ashanti, Central, and Eastern regions), serving a population of 12+ million people. Our work is grounded in evidence: every assessment uses DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria; every family program draws on validated caregiver coaching research.
The Gap We Address
In Ghana, an estimated 8-15% of school-age children have learning or behavioral difficulties—yet 95% never receive formal assessment or support.
Without early identification and intervention, children internalize shame, abandon school, and face lifelong barriers to employment and dignity.
Three Interconnected Pillars of Support
Every child deserves to be understood, supported, and thriving.
We work across three core areas to make that possible.
Learning & Behavior Support
Early identification, evidence-informed assessments, and targeted interventions for children with learning and behavioral differences.
- Psychological and educational assessments (DSM-5, ICD-11)
- Classroom coaching for teachers
- Individual intervention plans
- Community screening campaigns
Family Empowerment
Equipping families with knowledge, tools, and confidence to support their children's growth at home and in school.
- Parent coaching and workshops
- Trauma-informed family support
- Advocacy skills training
- Community health worker training
Adoption Services
Safe, legal pathways ensuring children who cannot grow with their birth families thrive in permanent, loving homes.
- Pre-adoption counseling
- Home study assessments
- Legal guidance and referrals
- Post-placement follow-up support
